When driveways define the divide: fixing fairness in EV charging

As the world turns its attention to COP30 in Brazil, one theme is standing front and centre: climate justice. It’s the principle that environmental progress must go hand in hand with fairness, inclusion, and opportunity for all – which sits at the very heart of our mission.

Global leaders will be gathering to debate how to deliver an equitable transition, but we’re doing it every day, right here on UK streets, through our on-street EV charging infrastructure that makes sustainable transport accessible to everyone, not just those with driveways. Here’s how we’re closing the driveway divide and proving that fairness can be built into the very fabric of our streets.

The challenge: when EV charging access isn’t equal

Around 9 million UK households don’t have a driveway, meaning millions of drivers simply can’t install a home charger. For them, the choice to go electric isn’t blocked by interest, but by infrastructure inequality.

Public EV charging in the UK remains a postcode lottery. In some areas, you’ll find reliable, accessible charge points on every corner; in others, queues, detours, and higher charging costs are the norm. These barriers don’t just inconvenience drivers. They risk creating a two-tier transition to electric vehicles, where only those with private driveways can enjoy the full benefits of home charging: convenience, low costs, and waking up to a full battery each morning.

Charging equity must be part of the conversation to make the UK’s transition to net zero truly fair. That’s where our Trojan Home solution steps in.

Trojan Home: fairness engineered into every street

We’ve designed an innovative solution that brings home-connected, on-street charging to every resident, including those without driveways. Our flat-and-flush charging points sit discreetly in the pavement, helping to eliminate street clutter and keep pedestrians safe. Residents simply plug their personal adaptor into their car and draw power straight from their home energy supply. They’ll benefit from the very same low-cost home EV charging rates as those with driveways.

Unlike bulky roadside chargers or lamppost retrofits, Trojan Home is completely unobtrusive, helping to preserve the look and feel of the street and give drivers reliable access right where they park. This results in a cleaner, safer, and more community-friendly approach to EV charging that doesn’t require designated bays or disruptive installations.

Councils across the country are now choosing Trojan Home. We’re already live in Kent, Coventry, Bolton, Renfrewshire, East Lothian, Barnet and Wokingham, where Trojan Home is giving more residents the power to charge where they park by bringing fair, reliable, and convenient charging where it’s needed most.

These councils recognise the impact of the driveway divide and they’re taking real action to close it. By choosing Trojan Home, they’re ensuring that those without driveways get the same ultra-low-cost, super-convenient charging experience as those with off-street parking.

This isn’t just on-street EV charging. It’s home-connected charging, built to deliver fair access, shared infrastructure, and reliable performance at scale.

Why climate justice matters

COP30 will call on nations to design fair and inclusive pathways to decarbonisation, ensuring that no community is left behind in the race to net zero. But true fairness doesn’t start in policy papers, it starts in practice.

Climate justice is about much more than just reducing emissions. It’s about ensuring that the social benefits of decarbonisation are shared fairly. When one household can charge affordably at home but their neighbour has to pay double at a public charger, it’s not just an issue of convenience; it’s an issue of fairness.

Every time a resident without a driveway plugs in their car outside their home, it’s a small act of climate justice in motion. It’s proof that the benefits of the clean-energy transition (lower emissions, lower costs, and greater independence from fossil fuels) can and should reach every household.

Our solution perfectly embodies what COP30 stands for. As well as powering cars, it powers inclusion, helping local authorities to deliver their net zero commitments and ensuring that sustainability works for everyone. By removing the reliance on public charge points and providing residents with a home-connected alternative, we’re helping to level the playing field for the millions left out of the EV revolution.

What the road ahead looks like

At Trojan Energy, we believe that climate justice begins with fair access for everyone. By reimagining how and where people charge, we’re helping to build a cleaner, more inclusive transport network that works for every household, on every street.

Because the path to net zero isn’t just about reducing emissions. It’s about removing inequality and ensuring that no one is left behind. As our Chief Executive Officer, Ian Mackenzie, puts it: “Fairness isn’t a feature; it’s the foundation. At Trojan Energy, we’re proving that a just transition to net zero starts on the streets we all share.”
