To accelerate EV adoption, and make the transition more just, home charging must be a policy priority for those without off-street parking, given it’s the clear consumer preference.
As part of our ongoing activity to build insight into consumer preferences under the EV transition, Trojan Energy and its partner WA Communications commissioned Deltapoll to conduct a survey of 1,000 drivers who do not currently drive an EV and do not have access to off-street parking. The survey was conducted in late June 2024 to understand attitudes towards charging and the wider market.
In the first release of this series, we highlight the clear preference for home charging solutions and the extent to which the lack of such solutions is a barrier to a just transition:
1. 54% see the provision of home charging solutions as a national priority for government in the EV transition, rising to 58% among those households with more than one car
2. 54% of adults in households without a driveway would be likely to purchase an electric vehicle if they had access to home charging solutions
3. 62% expect to charge their EV, when they get one, at home or on-street close to their home
4. 50% of those with one or two cars feel that their inability to access home charging solutions is preventing them from switching to an EV
It’s clear that barriers to such solutions, both political and cultural, must be addressed to avoid leaving behind a huge segment of circa 7.8 million UK drivers who park on-street.
Further findings will be released shortly, including consumer appetite for government’s support in accessing on-street home charging solutions and attitudes of Gen Z and Millennials towards the EV adoption.
