Local EV Charging Points: The answer to the UK’s transition to electric
First Published:

It’s estimated that 25-40% of UK households don’t have driveways, meaning they can’t install home EV chargers. Without access to local charging options, millions of people are being left behind in the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This is a key challenge we must solve if the UK is to reach its sustainability goals.
At Trojan Energy, we believe that local EV charging points are the missing link to scaling electric vehicle use fairly and effectively. Here’s why…
Uncovering the national EV challenge
The UK government is pushing ahead with EV adoption to meet its air quality targets and overarching goal of becoming net zero by 2050. A number of measures have already been put in place, including the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEN) mandate, which means that 100% of new vehicles sold in the UK from 2035 onwards will be electric.
But the lack of off-street parking for millions of UK residents presents a huge challenge. The reality is that we can’t expect people to go electric if they don’t have anywhere convenient, or affordable, to charge. The majority of EV charging happens overnight – not at service stations, but at or near home. Local charging infrastructure must mimic that experience for those without off-street parking. Therefore, charging at the kerbside while parked overnight is the only logical alternative to driveway charging.
So, how can we achieve this? It’s clear that the government needs to make on-street electric vehicle charging a priority. Without it, we risk creating a divided system where only those with off-street parking can fully participate. To unlock mass EV adoption, on-street charging infrastructure must be treated as an essential requirement, not an optional nice-to-have.

Why local EV charging points matter
Switching to electric vehicles can present a huge lifestyle shift for some households. One of the biggest influences on a person’s decision to go electric is the convenience of nearby charging. If an EV owner has a public charging point on their street, they can rest assured that they will always be able to charge near their home. However, if they have to drive 15 minutes to their nearest charger, they may be more likely to stick with petrol or diesel.
On-street, affordable EV charging solutions are helping to bridge this gap. They reduce range anxiety, build trust, and empower households without driveways to make the switch. Local charging should be the foundation, and rapid charging should be the safety net, not the default. Because when chargers are integrated into the kerbside landscape, they become a natural part of everyday life.
For local authorities, EV charging kerb solutions are driving fair participation in the UK’s energy transition. Accessible and affordable chargers help to not only serve current demand, but also shape future user behaviour. By clearly addressing the needs of communities, councils can build long-term confidence in EV infrastructure.
Unlock street-smart, scalable EV infrastructure with Trojan Energy
Trojan Energy’s mission is to ensure that nobody is left behind in the energy transition. We’ve designed our on-street EV charging system around the way that people already live and move around, making charging easy and accessible for all.
Our ‘flat and flush’ charge points sit level with the pavement, helping to eliminate street clutter and potential trip hazards. We can install up to 10 charge points on a single street without altering how people park – there’s no need for dedicated bays or unattractive bollards. Our charging networks are future-ready and can be scaled as community EV adoption grows.
But we don’t just stop at design. We also work closely with local authorities to ensure that our chargers are installed in the right places. We blend advanced data with local insights to identify optimal on-street charging locations based on accessibility and real-world demand. This means that the right infrastructure is built from the beginning, so you don’t waste money on underused charge points.

Installing fair & accessible EV charging points, one street at a time
There’s real momentum behind the UK’s shift to electric vehicles. Government EV charger grants, coupled with increasing public pressure, is driving fast rollouts. But we can’t afford to lose sight of the real need for practical and local EV charging that works with everyday life, not against it.
For the millions without off-street parking, accessible on-street charging isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. So, if we want to deliver a fair and effective energy transition, EV infrastructure must meet people where they are – right on their kerbside.
