Younger drivers who make up the majority of the UK workforce express clear preference for EV ownership, while also supporting active travel
As part of our ongoing activity to build insight into consumer preferences under the EV transition, @Trojan Energy and its partner WA Communications commissioned Deltapoll to conduct a survey of 1,000 drivers who do not currently drive an EV and do not have access to off-street parking. The survey was conducted in late June 2024 to understand attitudes towards charging and the wider market.
The first of three releases highlighted the strong preference for home charging among on-street parkers and the second release highlighted the need for more targeted government support. In this final release, we show how EVs are favoured among those who make up the majority of the UK workforce:
1. 54% of adults in households without a driveway would be likely to purchase an electric vehicle if they had access to home charging
2. But that number rises to 65% among Generation Z and Millennials, who make up two-thirds of the UK workforce, meaning a lack of home charging is hitting those with a higher necessity for driving (to/from or while at, work)
These demographic groups typically express strong support for active travel, which is often used to imply a lower level of desire for car ownership. These figures show that while a reduction in car usage may be on the rise, these consumers still want a choice in how they travel, including access to their own electric vehicle.
